PSV Eindhoven began their Champions League campaign with a draw on Thursday. Sergiño Dest scored the equalizer in a 1-1 stalemate with Shakhtar Donetsk, but the team was left wanting more.
The American right-back found the net in the 48th minute, firing home a low pass from Armando Obispo from just inside the penalty area. Just before halftime, however, Shakhtar had taken the lead. Venezuelan midfielder Gleiker Mendoza scored his first goal for his new club. The move originated from a counter-attack following a heavy challenge on Dest near the halfway line, which PSV players felt was a foul. The goal was awarded after a quick video review.
Dest expressed frustration afterwards. "Even though it was a draw against a good team, we felt there was more possible in this match." the defender said. He analyzed the first-half performance. "We couldn't get through their defense, they are well organized. Maybe our tempo was too low."
Dest's leveler ensured PSV remained unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions. The team sits firmly atop the Eredivisie with 16 points from six games, their latest result a 4-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam.
