PSV Eindhoven have rewarded director of football affairs Earnest Stewart with a new contract running until the summer of 2030. The news was reported this week by roundtable.io and follows a period of significant sporting and financial success for the Eredivisie club.
Stewart, 57, joined from the United States Soccer Federation as director of football operations on March 1, 2023. His previous deal was set to expire in summer 2027. Under his leadership, PSV have won three Eredivisie titles, one KNVB Cup, and two Johan Cruijff Shields. The PSV women's team also won their first national championship under his influence. General manager Marcel Brands, who recently extended his own contract until 2029, welcomed the continuation. "With his football expertise, composure, integrity, and experience, Earnest has made a significant contribution to the sporting successes we have achieved together," Brands said.
What has Stewart achieved at PSV?
The American was instrumental in bringing head coach Peter Bosz to the club three years ago. Bosz himself recently extended his stay until 2028. Stewart has also played a key role in the club's transfer strategy. PSV reported positive equity of €48 million last season and generated almost €100 million in player sales. The club also qualified for the Champions League group stage. Stewart and Brands completed four signings in the final days of the transfer window, including the loan of Lutsharel Geertruida and the arrival of Filip Kostić on a two-year deal. In total, just under €50 million was spent on transfer fees.
What is PSV's current league standing?
Peter Bosz's team has started the new season strongly and currently sits second in the Eredivisie. After four matches, they have ten points from three wins and one draw. Their recent form is WWWD. PSV have scored fifteen goals and conceded five, giving them a +10 goal difference. They are, however, two points behind leaders AZ Alkmaar. A major test awaits with an away match against arch-rivals Ajax, who are fourth, on September 5. The current standings can be found here.
What are the objectives for this season?
PSV are targeting a fourth consecutive league title and also aim for success in the KNVB Cup. In the Champions League, the goal is to progress from the new league phase. Stewart himself emphasises that the building process continues. "We’re still building, both the team and the rest of the club," the director of football said. The squad for these ambitions can be viewed in the squad overview.
The club must face these challenges without Jerdy Schouten, who is currently sidelined. The injury status of the squad is tracked on the injuries page. The coming weeks, including the classic against Ajax, will be an important indicator for the course of the season. PSV play at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on September 5.
