Borussia Dortmund's managing director Lars Ricken expressed optimism about the potential impact of new signing Joey Veerman. The Dutchman, who recently completed a €21.5 million transfer from PSV Eindhoven, has been confirmed as the new signing and signed a five-year contract until June 2031. Ricken, present at Veerman's presentation, expressed confidence in his abilities, stating, 'Joey is a player who will help us enormously with his abilities. This summer, we deliberately placed one focus of our transfer activity on central midfield, because since the start of the year we have let two players go from that area, Pascal Groß and Salih Özcan - and we are planning to use Emre Can in central defence after his return to the team.'
Veerman's qualities were echoed by sporting director Nils-Ole Book, who highlighted his creativity, technique, and vision, adding, 'He has shown at PSV Eindhoven and with the Netherlands national team that he can consistently produce good performances at the highest level.'
Veerman, a 27-year-old midfielder, began his professional career at Volendam in 2016 and moved to Heerenveen in 2019. He joined PSV Eindhoven in 2022, where he developed into one of the best midfielders in the Eredivisie. During his time at PSV, he finished as the highest assist provider in the 2025-26 Dutch Eredivisie season with 14 assists, playing a total of 197 games and scoring 31 goals while winning eight titles, including two domestic cups and domestic Supercups each.
His arrival is a major boost for Borussia Dortmund, who have been lacking experienced personnel in the deep-lying midfield role. At 27, Veerman is in the prime of his career and brings plenty of top-flight experience. He could be in line to make his club debut this week against Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on Saturday, 22 August.
